Hiroshima Travel Guide
Hiroshima is a modern, easygoing city of streetcars, rivers, and okonomiyaki counters, with Peace Memorial Park at its center. Ten minutes by ferry, Miyajima adds a floating torii gate and forest hikes. Here is how to plan the visit.
Hiroshima In One Day: From The Peace Park To Miyajima
One day covers the essentials here. Begin with a quiet morning at the Peace Park and museum, then pause at the castle grounds. In the afternoon, ride the ferry to Miyajima and meet the great torii gate rising from the sea.
Peace Memorial Park
Monuments and quiet paths fill this riverside park dedicated to the memory of August 6, 1945. Give yourself an unhurried hour before moving on to the museum.
Peace Memorial Museum
Exhibits present the events of August 6, 1945 and its aftermath through personal artifacts and photographs. Plan on at least an hour inside; adult admission is 200 yen.
Adults 200 Yen
Hiroshima Castle
The keep closed to visitors in March 2026, so the castle is now admired from its walls and moat. The surrounding park makes an easy stroll before lunch.
Exterior Only
Itsukushima Shrine
The ferry crossing to the island takes about ten minutes. Shrine entry is 300 yen for adults, and mind the gaps between the corridor floorboards.
Hiroshima Right Now: Tides, Weather And Closures
Hiroshima Bay tide (JMA, Hiroshima station)
Hiroshima Bay tide on 30 October: high water at 12:29 (354 cm) and 23:59 (300 cm), low water at 05:48 (13 cm) and 18:26 (149 cm). To be down near the great torii on Miyajima, plan around low water and allow a margin, since the island runs a few minutes off this gauge.
- High water
- 12:29 / 23:59
- 354 / 300 cm
- Low water
- 05:48 / 18:26
- 13 / 149 cm
- Tide range
- 341 cm
- lowest to highest, 30 October
Data: Japan Meteorological Agency (tide prediction, Hiroshima station, and the Hiroshima forecast), JMA public data (source credited). Times are Japan time (Asia/Tokyo); heights are cm above the station's tide-table datum, not above the torii base. A prediction for the Hiroshima gauge, not a Miyajima reading.
Hiroshima Castle's keep has been closed to visitors since 22 March 2026, though the grounds and exterior remain open to see. Shukkeien Garden adult entry costs 350 yen, and Hiroden trams run a flat 240 yen adult fare on every line, including the Miyajima line.
Hiroshima Sights Worth Your Time
Hiroshima's major sights cluster within easy reach, so a few days cover plenty of ground. The Peace Memorial Park and its museum sit at the heart of most itineraries, with the castle and Shukkeien Garden nearby. A short ferry ride then opens up Miyajima and Itsukushima Shrine.
Itsukushima ShrineThe vermillion shrine and its great torii rise straight from the tide on Miyajima.
Adults 200 Yen

Plan Hiroshima By Mood
Hiroshima For History Lovers
Hiroshima carries a history that rewards quiet attention. The Peace Memorial Park, the Atomic Bomb Dome and the Peace Memorial Museum sit within an easy walk of each other, and castle grounds and rebuilt streets add layers from earlier eras. Plan at least half a day.
Peace Memorial ParkRiverside lawns and quiet memorials make this park a place for slow, respectful walking.
Atomic Bomb DomeThe ruined building by the river remains exactly as it stood after the bombing.
Peace Memorial MuseumExhibits explain the bombing and its aftermath with care; adult entry is 200 yen.
Hiroshima For Rainy Days
Rain need not rearrange a Hiroshima itinerary. The city keeps plenty under cover, from museum halls to an okonomiyaki food hall where the hotplates never cool. An umbrella walk in the garden suits a gray afternoon too.
Shukkeien GardenPine trees and pond views soften under an umbrella, and adult entry is 350 yen.
OkonomimuraHead upstairs for warm counters serving Hiroshima's famous layered okonomiyaki.
Orizuru TowerFloor to ceiling glass keeps the rain off while the Peace Memorial Park spreads below.
Mazda MuseumExhibits on the city's homegrown car maker fill an indoor hall that suits a wet afternoon.
Hiroshima For Food And Evenings
Evenings in Hiroshima belong to the hotplate and the lantern. Okonomiyaki counters cook cabbage, noodles and egg in plain view, while oyster grills and izakaya lanes keep the night going. Start hungry and stay out late.
Hiroshima OkonomiyakiCabbage, noodles, pork and egg stack into the city's signature hotplate meal.
What To Eat In HiroshimaBeyond the hotplate: grilled oysters, fresh lemon and momiji manju sweets.
Evenings In HacchoboriAfter dark the lanes light up with izakaya signs, standing bars and small counters.
Hiroshima For Active Days
Hiroshima suits travelers who like to move. Flat riverside lanes make cycling easy, the ferry crossing to Miyajima takes about ten minutes, and forest paths climb Mount Misen above the shrine. Trams and boats tie a full day together.
Mount MisenForest trails and a ropeway serve the island summit; allow a full hour beyond the ride.
Miyajima By FerryThe JR ferry crosses to the island in about ten minutes, with departures through the day.
Cycle The Shimanami KaidoIsland hopping by bicycle across a chain of suspension bridges over the Seto Inland Sea.
Free Things To Do In Hiroshima
Many of Hiroshima's most meaningful places cost nothing to visit. Peace Memorial Park and the A-Bomb Dome exterior need no ticket, and riverside paths link them through the city center. On Miyajima, lanes beyond the paid shrine halls are free to explore.
Hiroshima Food: Okonomiyaki, Oysters And Evenings
Hiroshima cooks its most famous dish on a griddle, not in a pan. Okonomiyaki here arrives in distinct layers, oysters come straight from local waters, and whole buildings are devoted to the city's favorite dinner. After dark, the lanes take over.
Hiroshima Style Okonomiyaki
Layered, not mixed: cabbage, noodles, pork and egg stack up on the griddle.
Oysters On Miyajima
Grilled, fried or raw, Miyajima turns the local harvest into street food.
Okonomimura Food Stalls
One building gathers okonomiyaki stalls, each with its own griddle style and loyal fans.
Hiroshima After Dark
When the griddles cool, narrow lanes near Hacchobori keep serving until late.

What Hiroshima Is Famous For
Peace Memorial Park
Monuments and quiet paths line the riverbank, inviting reflection at the city's heart. The annual Peace Memorial Ceremony takes place here each 6 August.
Atomic Bomb Dome
The ruined dome stands beside the Motoyasu River, preserved as a memorial to the bombing of 6 August 1945. Its skeletal frame is recognized worldwide as a symbol of peace.
Hiroshima Okonomiyaki
Hiroshima style layers batter, cabbage, noodles and toppings on the hot grill instead of mixing them. Each serving is cooked in front of diners and eaten fresh off the iron.
Itsukushima Shrine Torii
The great vermillion torii of Itsukushima Shrine rises from the shallows off Miyajima. At high tide it seems to float, and the ten minute ferry crossing gives a fine view on approach.
Hiroshima Oysters
Oysters farmed in the calm waters around Hiroshima are a prized local specialty. Menus across the city serve them grilled, fried, steamed or fresh from the shell.
Hiroden Streetcars
Hiroden streetcars are a much loved part of daily life, linking the city center with the coast. Adults pay a flat fare of 240 yen on every line, including the Miyajima line.
Can You Still See The Hiroshima Shadows?
The atomic bomb dropped on Hiroshima at 8:15 a.m. on 6 August 1945 left dark traces on stone where people and objects had shielded surfaces from the heat. This page reports, from the city of Hiroshima's own published material, what still exists and where.
What Does Hiroshima Mean In Japanese?
Hiroshima means wide island in Japanese, and the name is literal: the city was founded in 1589 on the largest island in the Ota River delta, where the river fans out into Hiroshima Bay on the Seto Inland Sea.
Is Hiroshima Still Radioactive?
The city of Hiroshima states plainly that radiation levels today are on a par with natural background radiation anywhere on Earth.
How Do You Pronounce Miyajima?
Miyajima is said mee-yah-jee-mah, four flat syllables with no stressed beat, and the name means shrine island in Japanese. Here is how to say it and every other word the Hiroshima trip throws at you.
Where Is Hiroshima Located?
Hiroshima is the capital city of Hiroshima Prefecture in the Chugoku region of western Honshu, built on the delta of the Ota River where it meets Hiroshima Bay, an inlet of the Seto Inland Sea.
How Long Was Hiroshima Radioactive?
Hiroshima's residual radiation fell to a thousandth of its initial level within a day of the bombing, and today the city's background radiation matches natural levels anywhere on Earth, according to the City of Hiroshima.
Is Hiroshima Worth Visiting?
Hiroshima pairs its Peace Memorial Park and Museum with the island of Miyajima, a castle, gardens and a food scene built around okonomiyaki and oysters.
Is Hiroshima Known For Ramen?
Hiroshima is famous first for okonomiyaki, but the city has a ramen identity of its own: a light postwar chuka soba, a soupless tantanmen sold at the station, and a dense cluster of shops around Nagarekawa and Hondori.
